Green juice can mean anything from a kale-spinach-celery-cucumber blend with one apple (genuinely nutrient-dense, ~80 kcal, ~10g sugar) to a "green" commercially bottled drink where the primary ingredients are apple juice and lemon with a trace of spinach (mostly sugar water with a green hue). The colour alone tells you nothing about the nutritional content.
The defining characteristic of a beneficial green juice is that leafy greens โ spinach, kale, romaine, chard, celery, or cucumber โ make up the bulk of the produce. When this is the case, the nutritional profile is genuinely impressive.

Chlorophyll โ the green pigment in plant cells โ has attracted significant wellness attention, with claims ranging from cancer prevention to blood detoxification. The reality is more nuanced.
What chlorophyll or its derivative chlorophyllin has evidence for: A 2001 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that chlorophyllin reduced aflatoxin-DNA adduct formation (a marker of liver cancer risk from dietary aflatoxin) by 55% in a human clinical trial in Qidong, China โ a region with high aflatoxin exposure from contaminated grain. This is a meaningful finding in the context of high aflatoxin exposure; it is not evidence that chlorophyll prevents cancer in general Western populations with normal dietary aflatoxin exposure.
What chlorophyll doesn't do: "Detoxify blood," "oxygenate cells," or function as a substitute for haemoglobin. Chlorophyll molecules are not absorbed intact into the bloodstream and do not participate in oxygen transport. The structural similarity between chlorophyll and haemoglobin (both are porphyrin ring structures) is real but does not mean chlorophyll performs haemoglobin's function in the human body.
Folate (vitamin B9) is arguably the most underappreciated nutrient in leafy green juice. A 16 oz spinach-celery-cucumber green juice provides approximately 120โ160mcg of folate โ roughly 30โ40% of the daily recommended intake. Folate is essential for DNA synthesis and repair, making it particularly important during pregnancy (folate deficiency is the primary cause of neural tube defects), and also relevant for cardiovascular health via homocysteine metabolism.
Dietary folate from juice is meaningfully bioavailable because the cell wall disruption in juicing increases the accessibility of folate compared to whole uncooked leafy greens, where much of the folate is trapped in cell matrices.
